Pros

When I started at GD it was a great place to work. Very supportive management. A balance of work-life was promoted and followed. It is no longer that way. They had a really great group of bright, intelligent engineers at the Needham facility. They were a pleasure to work with.

Cons

The last few years at GD were a negative experience. All the cons listed in other reviews are true: Too much management, management thinks engineers are interchangeable. They simply throw more bodies at a project and think that will solve the problem. Expected to work long hours and weekends with little recognition or financial compensation. Salaries are low compared similar jobs in other industries. There is definite favoritism and if you are favored you can get away with doing very little. Intelligent, hard working engineers that are not in the inner circle will get slighted.

Pros

There are pockets of really great people. Leadership who "get it", don't micromanage, and want to make the best product for critical customers. Innovative work can come out of this company, if some of the overhead was collapsed and knowledgeable engineers were empowered.

Cons

Leadership on some programs are ineffective. They solve problems by throwing more warm bodies at them, or by mandating unpaid overtime for non-contract employees. Process can be burdensome. Outlook is dim, given that the company has gone through staff reductions twice yearly, and has cut back on development funding.
