A finishing school for mini-dictators

Pros

Decent benefits. Some cool coworkers (if they weren't managers). But after a while I was happy to take a pay cut to work elsewhere.

Cons

If you can stomach the doublespeak, anti-transparency, games of telephone, penny pinching, thoughtlessness towards inferiors, and fear-based and closed-door decision making (handed down in stone, any criticisms of which are met with knee-jerk defensiveness), then you can probably have a long career here (besides, firing folks takes too much paperwork -- GW loves bureaucracy -- so if you have problem coworkers, it's easier just to leave). If you strive for a life of middle-management mediocrity, where you derive value from "respect my authoritah"-style management (but calling it "leadership"), fostering a culture of learned helplessness, and building up fiefdoms under you, you may thrive here.

"Go it alone" work environment

Pros

Work/life balance is good and the retirement contribution is very good (once vesting probationary period ends).

Cons

The university does not encourage a culture of collaboration. Put differently, it is robust with information silos and unresponsive departments that create slow and irregular workflow. You must often "go it alone" to teach yourself about a process or to navigate an abundance of red tape since no formal training offered. Having patience and an ability to work independently is a must since getting help from outside your own department is disappointingly difficult. Many business processes and workflow software are surprisingly dated and inefficient.
