Pros

Benefits, colleagues are brilliant, institutional values generally match my own.

Cons

The pay and the nature of Georgetown is that it is very top-heavy.

Pros

The Georgetown University community has a wealth of knowledge and resources for employees who wish to expand their knowledge, even outside their professional field. The campus is very accessible, and co-workers tend to be very supportive and collegial. Benefits are very good - a plus, as the university is a non-profit.

Cons

There is a very strange mix of higher education, government, and business culture at Georgetown University, and the three seldom mesh well. The education culture often is at odds with the increasingly business-focused practices of the administration. There are also some areas where a surplus of middle managers attempts to compensate for unfocused or unrealized initiatives. Utilizing tuition benefits can be difficult if classes conflict with work hours, or if program of study is outside your professional track. Pay scale is lower than comparable jobs in the government or private sectors, so retaining qualified staff can be difficult when the pay shortcomings are realized.

Pros

- Diverse work environment and ability to attend on-campus events (lectures, classes etc) - Good benefits to go with a modest salary - Free tuition after continuous employment of at least 12 months

Cons

- Modest salaries (though compensated by free tuition after a year of working full-time) - Work was not very challenging for someone with advanced skills - Little or no career advancement opportunities (despite being a large organization with numerous open job postings, there's very little effort to have employees switch departments in case of re-orgs or staff layoffs). - The tuition assistance benefit is a great employee benefit on paper. However, there is a lot of fine print, including a one-year waiting period. Worst experience of my tenure was being laid-off right after being accepted into a top-tier graduate program at the university. It meant that I had to pay the tuition out of pocket. - Management handled the layoffs process poorly.
