Pros
There is so much freedom to explore what interests you. My PI was always willing to hear my ideas and was incredibly supportive of new endeavors, even facilitating when they could.
Cons
I would have liked more guidance. As a first-gen graduate student, I was very unfamiliar with what my experience should look like. Other students were often prioritized over me.
