Pros

I have been working at GitLab for close to a year and I feel I'm in a good position now to write an accurate and honest review about the company. The company is truly a remote company and has adopted a culture and process for working asynchronously around the globe. Unlike many other companies that have gone remote only after COVID and now trying to shift to a hybrid model, GitLab has been built from day one to be a remote company operating all different timezones. My team works across a dozens of countries and timezones asynchronously. The company's culture is open and transparent more than any other company I worked for so far in my 10 years long career. Unlike many other companies that use transparency and openness in a shallow way and more as talent marketing strategy, GitLab processes have taken transparency into account. Most of, if not all of, the company's business and technical documents and discussions can be access online at GitLab.com itself. Building diverse team has been another impressive thing about GitLab for me. I very much enjoy working with GitLab as product every day. It's decent and very competitive with some unique aspects.

Cons

Like many other tech companies, GitLab has also been impacted by the recent macroeconomy changes and as a result, the company has to cut off on costs around every corner.

Pros

- Good work-life balance - "Unlimited" PTO is nice in theory (but really just an accounting gimmick to avoid payouts of accrued vacation time on employee exits) - Management seems to genuinely care about the well-being of individual contributors - CEO genuinely seems to genuinely care about the well-being of employees

Cons

- Very challenging collaborative environment - Most work is OKR-based and yet alignment justification is very weak (top-down objectives seem poorly interpreted through the common "telephone game" signal degradation) - Very limited opportunities for grassroots contributions - Failure to embrace systems automation
