      Pros

      There are hundreds of engineers working on a variety of hard technical challenges at DeepMind spanning compilers, accelerators (e.g. GPUs), distributed systems, production services, SRE and more. DeepMind does not require AI/ML knowledge for Software Engineering roles and you can have a lot of impact on ML research projects as a pure SWE at DeepMind.

      Cons

      There are so many interesting and exciting things to work on that sometimes it is hard to switch off. Having such brilliant colleagues can exacerbate feelings of imposter syndrome. Luckily DeepMind has great opportunities to learn, grow and an established feedback culture to help direct you. The interview process is tough.

      - Interesting & challenging engineering problems - Incredibly smart, supportive colleagues - Inspirational mission - it feels like the work you're doing really matters - Great opportunities for career growth - DeepMind has evaluation & promotion processes that feel structured, fair, and transparent - Excellent compensation & benefits - Great work-life balance (especially in engineering, I never see people work >40 hours)

      - Being part of Alphabet can sometimes introduce complexity & formal process that a company DeepMind's size wouldn't normally have to deal with

      A good work life balance is encouraged and supported, but more people work too hard than not hard enough Diversity, as with most of tech, leaves a lot to be desired
