Fast Growth

Pros

Fast growing company with many new opportunities and roles to fill. Coworkers are friendly and always happy to help. Lots to learn in this fast paced environment.

Cons

In some departments, certain individuals are being overworked while others just cruise by doing just the care minimum. This causes good employees to be burned out and leave.

Pros

-Lots of young people fresh out of college, so I didn't feel lost in the workplace or inadequate, because so many people were in the same boat...you can make a lot of new friends, I definitely met some great people and lifelong friends -Is close to public transit and within walking distance of lots of places to eat, very close to Neponset Bridge

Cons

-The first job/department you start in can determine your fate. I watched some people move up incredibly quickly simply because they were liked by their manager/supervisor. I watched others, entirely more hard working, dedicated, and intelligent, remain utterly dormant for years for no good reason. It is definitely backwards. -The pay is absolutely abysmal. Again, this is dependent on what department you start in and how quickly you move up - as mentioned above, I watched some of the best workers remain for 5+ years and barely make $40k. Absolutely atrocious.

Not a good place for a career

Pros

I worked at Granite for a few years and believe while it is possible for Granite to be a good place to work it is not there right now nor does it show signs of working toward that. The job responsibilities are basic so without the ability to learn and grow there really is not significant reason to stay with the company for that long. If you are just looking for a 1 to 2 year job or just a paycheck this is it. Just don't expect to get a competitive salary.

Cons

The leadership is dysfunctional and lacks quality people. There are a few strong leaders in the company but most of them are not from within the original Granite team and were hired from outside companies. Those that are from within Granite are often times promoted because of tenure rather than qualification. This has resulted in many members of the management team to be under qualified leaving subordinates to feel like they cannot learn anything. The turnover at Granite is not unusually high but it is not a job to be excited about. I have seen many people leave the company to hugs and congratulatory words for "getting out" or "moving on". While there are areas where one can develop, it is not a place I would recommend to someone looking to grow their career or skills. The CEO acts pompously and childlike. He gave a survey to employees then when it came back with a view point different to his own he told those who felt differently than he that they could leave whenever they want. It certainly is his way or the highway. He has surrounded himself with yes men who do not question him ever. This type of leadership stifles any type of growth or change within the company.
