Pros

Excellent opportunity to learn a skill needed for submitting a variety of funding applications to different US Government and military agencies. Ability and opportunity to work with a variety of clients with differing backgrounds for projects. Opportunity to learn about regulatory, clinical and registration aspects that are outside of the regular grant application and writing. Regularly work with dedicated leadership and other team members (lead writers and program managers).

Cons

Company is completely virtual and not all employees are full time. This makes scheduling a bit difficult, especially with employees who are part time and have a focus on another position.

Pros

At Grant Engine I have always been stimulated by new grant topics and clients. The delivery team is a tight-knit, supportive group of experts that truly are passionate about their work and want to see you and the entire team succeed. The CEO is engaged, approachable, considerate, and highly-motivated which in turn is reflected in the rest of the team. The company as a whole encourages and supports a healthy work-life balance with remote work and intentional time off between cycles. Compensation is strong and commensurate with throughput and success. GE is unique in that most of their writers are full-time, which is not common in the field of grant writing.

Cons

As the work is highly deadline driven and client-specific, the usual time crunches and hurdles associated with slow or disorganized clients are present. Since Grant Engine is growing, the workload can exceed your anticipated load with your approval, but this is compensated accordingly and the collaborative nature of the team helps get all grants across the finish line at crunch time.

Pros

The leadership and team are very supportive, accessible, and truly invested in creating a positive environment for all employees. As others have mentioned, it is a very flat organization. Feedback from everyone is sought, appreciated, and implemented. On-the-job training is provided and SOPs are up-to-date and very helpful. The flexibility, trust, and agency extended to all team members is outstanding. Even though the job is fully remote and the work is challenging, help is always just a call or Slack message away.

Cons

As others have mentioned, the 2-3 weeks before each NIH grant deadline (1/5, 4/5, and 9/5) are super intense. The expectation is that everyone will be on call 7 days a week and it is not uncommon to be working 10-12 hours a day at this time. This intensity is counterbalanced by the stern expectation by leadership that everyone takes a minimum of 1-2 weeks off after these deadlines. And the rest of the time the workload is manageable.
