Disfunctional Family

Pros

Family-like bonds, low turnover, job security, internal hiring, good benefits (but not amazing), important part of the county community

Cons

Disfunctional organizational design, out of touch administration, poor internal communication (no one knows what the other departments are doing), recent layoffs, Continuing Education division is treated like a red-headed step child

Pros

I had a good working relationship with my department chair, and I did enjoy working with many of the students, especially the adults in my night classes.

Cons

The pay was atrocious, and, as at many community colleges, the students were either unprepared or unable to do college work, and in a discouraging number, unwilling. I found that I was constantly trying to balance my standards and the real needs of students who'd been poorly uneducated in the county schools.

GTCC focuses on those who need a leg up, they let you help promote those from lower income groups, and also those in the higher income groups to succeed.

Cons

State politics can slow good changes you try to make.
