Pros

Great connections to other industry pros, gear companies, access to industry events (NAMM) etc. You meet all the local musicians in your area, great for forming a band, or reaching fans. Excellent company support for musicians, gear programs, contests, time off for going on tour.

Cons

The pay sucks. The hours are long. Upselling when not necessary, pushing people's budgets, pushing credit cards, competing with your coworkers, sucks. Also, as a woman I experienced

Not a bad job

Pros

Talk music and instruments during entire shift. Cool people to work with who share your passion for music. Awesome employee discounts.

Cons

Commission based pay which is very hard to reach unless you work in guitars, drums, or pro audio. I worked in accessories, so made minimum wage because those products are too cheap for one to make any commission. Also, computer system from the stone age.
