Pros

-Very flexible with hours. After a certain amount of months you basically get to pick your availability which is great if you want nights off. -Great co-workers and managers. I have no complaints about the leadership at HEB, from what I know they were all very competent and able people. They had social awareness and were easy to talk to generally. -Everything is online. If its picking up a shift or requesting time off, everything is computerized and easy. Even the schedule.

Cons

-Extremely, extremely monotonous and depressing work. I've had 4 solid long term jobs in my life, and this is by far the most excruciating labor I've ever had to do. Standing in the same spot for over 2 hours gets old very fast. It takes literally no skills to be a cashier except maybe basic math abilities in counting money. -Customers are overly demanding. Often times you will find yourself juggling 2 or 3 customer requests at once, which becomes very stressful if you've got a line of people waiting. -Work is too fast paced and militant. You never stop hustling, get tired fast even on short shifts. If it's slow they send people home. -Low pay for the amount of work done. It's really not even worth getting dressed for 9 dollars an hour on a 5 hour shift. 11 or 12 dollars is what cashiers should be paid starting. -Always understaffed. HEB has to keep profit margins so they will teeter the line on employees. Expect to do the work of 2 people. Expect to cashier and bag groceries and get stuff for customers all at once.

Pros

HEB is very flexible with your school schedule and can also help with tuition. Shifts are flexible as well. 4 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts.

Cons

Although I did an excellent job and worked my tail off, I never could move up. I went to management several times and they agreed that I deserved to move up and promised to put me in the next training program but never did. When I left, some senior management approached me and were very upset I was leaving. I told them why and they had never heard from my direct manager. It was unfortunate because senior management was very effective and caring.
