Pros

They pay well, they get good work.

Cons

Management is not looking out for the employee, unless you are related to someone that can get them money/work. On the average job the upper management and billing department strips off 1/3 of the budget before you've even started the project.

Pros

Good pay, overtime benefits, will gladly pay you for getting extra certifications. Projects are cool.

Cons

It’s still consulting, and it’s public clients. So it’s always going to be long hours and smaller budgets. They’re also old school and run by old farts that think that being in the office at all times is best and that work comes before literally everything else.

Pros

Good pay. Good location. Decent benefits.

Cons

Poor Management. Group managers are worked like slaves and don’t have the time to develop new grads or new hires. Instead, you will be saddled with months and months of mundane tasks so they can keep you billable until they find something else for you to do. The Houston office culture is a shell of what it once was. There used to be a great balance of friendship and respect among management and project teams. Now it’s do your job, don’t ask questions, this is wrong, go home. Some of Senior management actually cares but just doesn’t have the time. Other offices in the company are balanced and cooperative and I now work remote for another branch which is night and day from the Houston office. Pay is good but you won’t develop the skills necessary to work for another firm at the same caliber. After several years if I were to apply with another firm I would not be surprised if they asked me “what exactly did you learn at HNTB?” Thankfully I am catching up after transferring to a new office.
