Incredible talent abounds at every level; innovation and ideas are abundant among the younger employees; collegiate atmosphere at entry and mid-level; exposure to excellent and ambitious design projects; strong global reputation.

Cons

At a time of monumental change within the design world - capital scarcity, energy efficiency, sustainability of buildings and landscapes - HOK has been hesitant to jump in and set the industry standards for a new way of thinking about and executing design projects. Due to risk aversion and an unwillingness to take its eye off the ball that served it so well historically, HOK has allowed other firms such as Jacobs, Perkins+Will, AECOM and Gensler, to set the new industry standards. As a closed corporation, retirement pay-out is dependent on the share value at the time of retirement. Mid-level employees believe that the elderly men on the board of directors will not venture into areas that may jeopardize share value and their retirement, even if it would lead to greater valuation in the future.
