Pros

For people that don't know the difference between an operator (oil company) and a service company ( such as Hal, Schlumberger), Halliburton provides different type of services (i.e. wireline, MWD, ect) to the oil companies. I currently on the field as a wireline field engineer. Most of us guys doing this type of job get compensated fairly well. The more you work the more bonuses you get, simple as that. Compared to Schlumberger, Halliworld offers a lower base salary (upper 50s), but the bonuses make up for it. In my case, I work 6 days on and 6 days off, which is not bad, but when you're on, expect to be call at any time and work for x amount of hours, guaranteed. If you're in it for the money just like I am, then this is a good place to work otherwise get the experience and find another thing in this industry.

Cons

Halliworld will not send you to some place you don't want to go, unlike Schlumberger. I think the base salary can be a little higher than what it is. You work long hours with little sleep.

High Pressure, Low Support

Pros

None. I checked under the couch cushions, behind the printer, and in the employee handbook. Still nothing.

Cons

Look, I’m going to be blunt because nobody else will. The work life balance is a joke, full stop. The hours are whatever the business wants them to be, and the expectation is that you will deal with it. If you think anyone is going to notice you are burned out or step in to protect your time, you are going to be disappointed. The machine keeps moving, and you are expected to keep up. And the internal politics, it’s not a side issue, it’s the operating system. You can do good work and still get nowhere because the real game is alliances, visibility, and which camp you’re in this quarter. Teams can be territorial, priorities shift based on personalities, and decisions do not always follow logic or performance. It can feel impossible to navigate if you are expecting straightforward accountability. As for the executive team caring, let’s be serious. They care about outcomes, numbers, and not getting surprised. If you need empathy, reassurance, or a human-centered culture to feel supported, you are in the wrong place. This is an environment where you either learn to play the game and absorb the pressure, or you burn out and get replaced.

Pros

Halliburton really does try to promote from within and they’re one of the few service companies that doesn’t force their employees to constantly move around the globe. They’re well diversified and have an aggressive program to foster gender and racial equality in the company. They’re one of the few companies who truly strive to put their core values into the business they conduct.

Cons

If career progression is what you seek then you must align yourself with the correct people and path immediately or you will find yourself in a windless Sargasso Sea with no escape. Like all companies that operate in the fossil fuel industry, cyclical layoffs are just a fact of life.
