Some really nice people, everyone is overworked

Really nice people Very student service oriented Beautiful campus Flexibility in schedule

Cons

Repeated lay offs have left gaping holes in organizational structure No financial resources at all because of budget cuts Very difficult to get promoted Really bad training because of the disorganization Many people are very overworked

Pretty casual work environment (depending) Lots of bright, talented individuals Feels good to work for higher education, student success

Cons

Fiscal management is poor -- bounces back and forth between bonuses and layoffs/"realignments" year to year. Budgeting process not grounded in market reality, economic reality. Lots of talk about transparency, but little to no follow-through. Faculty and staff told that the low morale "is our problem". Recent layoffs at Hamline and voluntary early retirement (emergency measures to balance this year's budget) mean that already overworked staff are stretched even thinner. Impact could reverberate through university for years to come before things get back to normal.

Great work atmosphere. People are always very helpful and their is a good sense of community. Respected personal time and privacy.

Cons

Working in academia can be slow at times. Some processes are overly bureaucratic. Can't advanced without proper degrees. Lack of communications.
