Pros

Great part-time pay, solid benefits (profit-sharing, money for college), flexible with scheduling. Excellent opportunity for those in high-school or college looking for a part time job.

Cons

Certain managers under-staff to save money, leads to poor experience for the customer and the front line workers

Pros

Regular pay, albeit low. They give you opportunities to be knowledgeable in the area you are working, in my case regular tests on the various produce items. It is nice to be able to answer customers questions confidently.

Cons

I am left completely alone in the department in the afternoon until evening, nearly every day from +- 3p.m to 9pm. The produce department is MASSIVE, by the time I get from one side to the other, the former side is already destroyed by rush hour customers...it's never ending. I am also expected to completely clean the department prep-area (which is fine with me) as well as the sales floor (emptying trash cans, sweeping floor etc...), which is all fine except that the front-end is regularly understaffed and I am CONSTANTLY being called up to help bag and do customer carry-outs. Management is well aware that I am by myself, but has no shame in calling me up there to do various jobs. I could even deal with that, except that being alone in produce, I can't handle my whole department by myself and still be called away to do other things....I constantly get fussed at by my assistant department manager the next day for the state of the department (he is extremely negative and whiny)...all the while the Produce manager knows what is going on and says nothing to stop them from taking me out of produce during my shift. I just feel it is impossible. I am extremely hard-working and keep the department looking nice, but no one notices it until I get burned out and don't keep up the pace. I have been riding them about the BBT program to become a manager, which they encouraged me to apply for upon starting work...just to be put aside constantly. Current managers don't even adhere to directives from corporate, so it is frustrating to watch them complain when they won't give me a chance to move up.

Pros

Harris Teeter is a great store. I can find things there that I can't find anywhere else. The weekly speicials are great and the sales in the meat dept is outstanding! the produce dept is amazing!

Cons

Unless one is a member of management they are not allowed to work more than 28 hrs/week. At $8.25/hr that doesn't add up to be a lot of take home pay. The position of cashier requires one to not only collect money for groceries, but it also requires us to unload the carts as well as bagging groceries, and retrieving carts from the parking lot. I don't object to any of those things, but I feel that better wages would give me a greater incentive. Cashiers should be making a minimum of $10.00/h because of the responsibility of handling money and ensuring accuracy and keeping the integrity of the cash drawer secure. Management is forever harping on giving great customer service, but they are only paying lip service to that notion. When I have to stop scanning groceries to start bagging on large orders becuase I don't have a bagger or when I go to another register to bag for another cashier and stop in the middle of it to return to my register for customer checkout, it leaves the customer for whom I was bagging to wonder "Is it something I said?"During training we are told that Harris Teeter customers are not to bag their own groceries. I have said it before and will again, I'm not going to stop them from doing it when I have a line at my register.
