Pros

I worked in Technical Services for the Library System (buying books, essentially): Wonderful lifestyle, great place to be, nice benefits. I'm happy to have started my career there, but it's not an atmosphere that is easy to rise up in or gain more management experience.

Cons

The pay was low. Granted I was working in a Humanties field within academia, but a lot of pressure from changes in the education business really put the squeeze on headcount, overall job-enjoyability, etc.

Pros

Benefits are great and there are so many paid holidays and vacation time.

Cons

Staff needs all these perks and time off to retain mental health while dealing with the maze of disorganization, procedures that vary for the most minute details, and the many, many steps where something can break down and not get done in spite of the fact that you've taken all the right steps. Also, unless you're faculty or a scholar you're really not important.
