Good school for life but no career

Pros

Most of the people are really nice to work with, especially in the lower management and the operators. Salary and benefits are good. I learned a lot, in particular about people.

Cons

The headquarter management is totally incompetent. Budget decisions are erratic. They spend big $$ for travel and living expenses of the senior management while there is no such thing like a shower on a site that works for workers that handle 8 hr/day organic waste. The company has a technology to sell but no engineers on board. Instead, they rather rely on highly paid consultants from outside that do not have much clue either. Typically, those consultants come with lofty ideas but leave/are let go a couple of months later leaving a mess behind which need to be cleaned up by the people on the ground. With their environmental compliance, they are often on the border of legality. HR wise, the middle management in BC is a revolving door. Most people in the middle management, although dedicated and knowledgeable, are laid off again or leave after 1 - 2 years. I saw many tears in this company! Then, those employees are replaced by new, enthusiastically advertised people which turn out to be even less competent than the ones they just fired. At the same time, they stick to incompetent slackers and con artists for years before they notice the problem.

Exciting and Challenging -- Staying the Course

Pros

In my 4+ years here, I have found that I've had to wear many hats in my particular job, and while not all of them would be my first career choice, I believe this is a "pro" because it has exposed me to a lot of different departments, functions, and people. I've been able to showcase my areas of expertise and have also shown interest in areas where I'd like to learn more. The company's vision is fantastic, and the potential for success, both financially and operationally, is really strong.

Cons

It's been a "long and winding road" for sure. Changes in vision, structure, management. We have had some growing pains, and have fumbled a few times. New management appears to be hitting the ground running and is righting the ship so to speak. Change is hard, and not always welcome. I've had my moments of doubt, and considered leaving at various times, but I've held on and still see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Pros

Some great and very passionate people below the management level. Was a great idea at one time.

Cons

Culture is toxic, tone at the top is bad, no regard for fiduciary responsibility or investors money. Employees are treated really poorly by upper management, there's a high level of distrust and dishonesty. Some in management are verbally abusive in a way that's truly unbelievable in this day and age. Too many sacred cows and pet projects make budgets a joke. Do not work there unless you're desperate to get off unemployment. Turnover is crazy....there's a reason why.
