Pros

20 days vacation + 20 days sick + all state holidays and some federal holidays. Also, they won't lay you off like federal, everyone will be on furlough but you'll all have a job. No favoritism with salary increases, years of service is what will give you raises. If you are very friendly, positive, and a hard worker, you'll do great here.

Cons

After first four years raises are only every three years unless our union contract provides for across the board raises in between and if they do, it's very minimal (less than 2%). There are certain departments/people who thrive on power and therefore have ridiculous rules like no personal conversations with coworkers for more than 2 minutes, or if you're late 1 minute you have to take an hour off as leave without pay as punishment. People talk all across the judiciary so it can be really hard for someone to get out of a department, even if that department wants to get rid of you, they'll give you bad reviews just to keep you (I've seen this happen). Lots of room for movement or changing positions but not very much room for positions with higher salaries...generally, once you get into a certain job function, you stay there forever and just move up in your current position. Also, parking wait list is about 15 years and it's controlled by one person through favoritism. You can't even check to see if your name is on the list, she won't give you time of day. Many people who qualify for retirement but will never leave especially if they have top positions so everyone is waiting forever for those positions.

Pros

Worked with a strong team who helped each other out whenever possible. Strong support from direct supervisor and administrator. Loved working with clients to help them through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Cons

During my work experience at the State of Hawaii Judiciary, there were many time constraints to get Court documents filed, keep up on running records of clients, determine whether to detain a client or not, answer phones, email and other office duties that limited my time to spend with my clients, which is my passion.
