Hazelcast: A House of Cards

Pros

Despite a promising foundation, Hazelcast has been plagued by a series of missteps that have hindered its growth and employee satisfaction. Poor management, frequent strategic shifts, and an unclear vision have created a toxic work environment that has led to a revolving door of executives & weak management.

Cons

While the company's core product remains strong, its execution has been lacking. This is particularly evident in the limited growth opportunities for mid-career professionals. The frequent changes in leadership have made it difficult to maintain a consistent strategy, resulting in a focus on short-term gains rather than long-term sustainability. Dont be fooled by the lofty ideas by engineering & travel perks.. Its playing catchup.

Exec team and marketing disconnected from reality

Pros

Good product. Lots of smart people

Cons

Marketing doesn't understand what actual customers want. They don't speak to potential customers or to any existing customers, they only speak to analysts. Then based on what analysts say, drive the entire sales vision, which often contradicts what customers want. We have quarterly all-hands meetings where the CEO raves about how great we are doing, and how the company is growing, meanwhile everyone in the company knows the week before the all-hands, several people just got laid off. The company stayed the same size or even shrank across 2022, but to hear the execs at the all-hands, the company doubled in size. The execs never let reality change what they were saying, so if you knew they were lying about basic things, then what else are they lying about?

Pros

Honestly, a lot of the reasons for working here are gone. All the engineering talent worth working with has left in droves, leaving generally clueless leadership on what to do with this product in a fast-changing market quickly making the Hazelcast technology obsolete and irrelevant.

Cons

The CEO continuously makes bad hires, most starkly their CTO and CMO who did not take the time to understand the product and failed to make it relevant for the evolving market because of a lack of willingness to listen to customers.
