Pros

After 5 years with the company, I remain convinced that team members strive to live by the company's cultural values. This is constantly reinforced with unparalleled transparency in most operational areas of the organization and examples of assuming positive intent. I strongly agree with the company's benefit philosophy and have never felt the need to seek opportunities outside the organization. In a running experiment, I've sought to maintain a healthy and appropriate work/life balance with a keen eye for negative feedback - which has never come.

Cons

My criticisms are mostly short-lived, with corrections and adjustments happening frequently. I have concerns that the culture can be sustained in the face of becoming publicly traded and rapid expansion through acquisitions. Career paths are largely undefined, with some team members navigating better than others. Given the origins of the company, it is no surprise that there are close personal connections among team members with the longest lengths of service, which can make organizational changes seem cliquish. Recent acquisitions may offer more opportunities, but will also muddy the waters for the short term.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and for your five-plus years of contributions to our company as a product owner! I'm also really pleased to hear that you've been able to maintain good work/life balance throughout these five years -- that is certainly our hope for every team member. Thanks also for our feedback about the importance of maintaining the culture as we scale, and of enabling successful integration of our acquired companies. I agree that this takes particular focus. Thank you again for your feedback and for your many years of contributions! Best, Dan

Pros

Company leadership is principled and sincerely dedicated to the wellbeing of everyone at the company. As an employee I have the autonomy to work on interesting problems and it is energizing to know that my work helps improve patient care in one way or another. Company culture is very down-to-earth.

Cons

The stereotype of medical IT being 10+ years behind the state-of-the-art is unfortunately pretty true and it can be frustrating. But, the innovation is ongoing and Catalyst is probably better-off than most healthcare technology companies in this regard.

Thank you for your feedback and perspective. I agree with your feedback, both positives and challenges, including the difficulties of healthcare organizations often being slow to adopt innovation and new technology. I'm hopeful that we can see meaningful progress here in 2021, including in our data science and AI offerings. I'm really excited by what Jason Jones, our Chief Data Science Officer, has been sharing as part of our planning process. Your team's work is really encouraging and pragmatic and also innovative! Thank you again for your feedback and contributions! Best, Dan

Pros

1) It is easy to make lifelong friends at this company. Each and every team member I interact with are just incredible human beings. 2) Realizing valuable ROI with our clients and experiencing the chance to change healthcare for the better one project/client at a time is very satisfying 3) Very mission driven 4) Leadership is transparent 5) I love the success framework 6) I love my team, my peers, and my managers 7) Incredible benefits and great place to work

Cons

1) While innovation is happening through acquisitions (which I love and think we should do more of), internal innovation has completely dried up (not referring to HAS because it's not a sellable solution for our clients). Our operations team has created so many heavy handed processes, meetings and internal checkpoints that it's impossible to innovate and create solutions that truly benefit our client partners. We have business units that have hardly seen any success in 2-3 years and we still continue to dump money and resources into them. At the same time, we tamp down any new ideas or solutions that don't fit within our preconceived boxes of thinking and processes that we have made for ourselves internally. It's frustrating to watch. Why do we continually funnel money and resources to solutions that can't sell and haven't provided any real value for our clients? There is no process in place to pilot from the ground up. Way too top heavy. 2) We have created a culture of entitled complainers. Catalyst is an incredible place that offers an incredible benefits package and culture. Yet people still find ways to overwhelm the Q&A feeds with complaints that sound petty and ungrateful. Yes, there will always be room for improvement, but do we really need to complain about not getting our pie on pie day because the office is closed for COVID? We do ourselves a disservice focusing our efforts on addressing entitled behaviors.

Thank you for this detailed, thoughtful and well-informed review and feedback. Thank you also for 8+ years of contribution to Health Catalyst. And thank you for your courageous transparency in highlighting some areas where we need to improve. I find much of what you share to be very resonant, and areas where we specifically want and need to improve in 2021. This includes a re-look at our professional services pricing model, the relationship between software and accelerators, the innovation investment process, the growth pillar investments, and making tough decisions about where to stop investing as well. I also admit that we may struggle as leaders being too 'nice' and not making deeper cuts to enable greater investment in new areas. I think this is a personal challenge of mine, particularly during the pandemic. Other senior leaders are a good complement and balance to me, and I'll try to listen carefully to these other voices and perspectives throughout the planning process. I hope you will choose to stay with us at Health Catalyst, but I also understand that there are times and seasons for different types of experiences, and if you do decide to pursue another path, I wish you incredible success! Best, Dan
