Pros

Health Catalyst is different in a good way. As far as I can tell from my experiences so far, executive leadership is honest, transparent and accountable. I trust that they see employees as people, not just "resources" and frame decisions about the business through that mindset. I've been at a few other companies in my career and this is not always the case. My experience so far has been in a client-facing role, and I have a great client which is respectful and considerate. Our team works hard to meet their deliverables (which are reasonable) and they are very appreciative of the value we provide them. Our client-facing internal team is supportive and respectful. I am not so naive to think that this is always the case and every client is easy to work with. I worked with HC at a client in a previous position and was impressed with everyone I worked with enough that I joined HC. My experience being inside the company now has confirmed my experiences as a client - so far, everyone has been helpful, smart, considerate and hard working. The benefits are excellent. The compensation structure with bonuses and RSUs helps you achieve a higher total comp when company performance is good. Work is always going to be work, but it is nice to be in an environment where HC and our clients are trying to improve the world - I've been able to work on projects which really, truly, actually are making a positive difference for people and patients and we have the data to back that up. It's not just relentless pursuit of profit, analytics for the sake of squeezing every last bit of profitability from a customer, and I appreciate being able to finish my day knowing the work I did is positive and contributes to the greater good. To summarize, I'm happy to be here. Everything in life has pros and cons, and so far my experience at HC is that the pros far outweigh the cons.

Cons

if you're reading this during interviews, make sure you negotiate a base salary you'll be happy with for a few years, as there doesn't seem to be a standard yearly 2-4% COL raise here. Company performance seems to dictate when/how much standard (non-promotion) raises are given. This is understandable for a company in the growth phase which is working hard to be sustainably profitable, and the RSUs do help, but are subject to the fluctuations of the stock market, and bonuses are not guaranteed although my understanding is they have been paid almost every year although not always at 100% (sliding scale). Be sure to be your own advocate during the hiring process as that may be your salary for a few years. "Unlimited" PTO is a racket that companies use to avoid paying out accrued vacation time upon departure and and minimize employee-related costs on balance sheets. I wish HC would move to a formalized PTO structure and renegotiate client contracts in such a way that doesn't subtly discourage taking time off work. I knew exactly what I was getting into with "unlimited" PTO and was sure to make sure my total compensation made it worthwhile for me personally. That said, my work life balance has been good and most weeks I am working 40-45 hours. Nobody questions my coming and going or when I take days off as long as my client is happy and I'm meeting my deliverables - your mileage may vary.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and thank you for choosing to join Health Catalyst this past year. I'm grateful to hear of the positives you've experienced, and am also appreciative of your constructive feedback. Regarding base salaries, we're pleased that nearly every team member at Health Catalyst received a meaningful base salary increase of 5% on April 1, or a pro rated increase for those who'd been with Health Catalyst less than a year. And we're excited to continue to prioritize base salary increases in the future. Also, we'll keep emphasizing, at every level, the importance of taking time off, and our support for every team member to have meaningful time off that is flexible, every single year, through a combination of many company-paid-holidays and additional PTO time. Thanks again for your feedback and for being at Health Catalyst! Best, Dan

Pros

There are so many pros that come to mind when thinking about HC. The benefits are great, the culture is top notch, and the transparency of leadership is incredible. I have never worked for a company (or heard of a company!) that has more transparent leaders than HC. What is even better, the leadership here is SO personable. While I’ve never met them in a 1:1 setting, I have no doubt I’d feel comfortable and not feel those “oh my gosh I’m talking to a CEO” type of jitters. There is a diverse group of clients ranging from large health systems, to research institutes. Project work is pretty diverse too, with opportunities to switch around and see different things (Rev Cycle, Clinical/Quality, etc.).

Cons

This isn’t anything new, but the pay could be better. I would say we are below market, and certainly trending lower given the inflation rate is much greater than the annual raise rate. Additionally, the bonus program for base level Analytics Engineers is nothing special, and not motivating. I’d really like to see the bonus percentage increase for base level Analytics Engineers. With all this said, the culture and benefits do help ease some of the frustration with this. Lastly, given the staffing shortages across health systems, a lot of work these days is staff augmentation and you’re just filling a role on the clients team. I don’t feel like I’m making a huge difference or truly providing consulting services.

Thank you for choosing to join Health Catalyst, and for sharing this review and feedback. I appreciate the positives you mentioned, and look forward to an opportunity to visit with you 1:1 in the future -- if you'd like to visit, I prioritize holding at least 200 skip-level 1:1s with teammates every year, so just reach out to my assistant Jenn Howard and we'll schedule a time to visit. I appreciate also the feedback regarding compensation, which we'll discuss in today's all team member meeting. We're happy to be including meaningful base salary increases in the 2022 operating plan, along with above-market equity grants for team members, as well as an increase to the 401(k) match mid-year, and we're also excited that the bonus payout for 2021 performance, which team members will receive in early March, will be at such a high level. But I also believe we have more work to do. And we'll continue to prioritize team member compensation in 2023 and beyond as well. One opportunity to see the bonus percentage increase comes with promotions, and we'll continue to fund promotions in 2022 and beyond, to enable team members to qualify for greater opportunities which often include higher compensation levels. Thank you again for joining Health Catalyst! Best, Dan
