Overall good company, but it depends on your team

Pros

The executive team is amazing. The CEO and all the other "C-level" leaders seem to be truly invested in preserving the company culture. I believe they really do care. They are approachable and available to talk to any employee. The company also has some pretty visionary "heavy hitters" in their leadership ranks, which will ultimately make the company hugely successful. There are some amazing upper-management people who really care about the company and it's culture, so consider that when you read the "cons" below. Most people are very friendly and willing to teach you and help you fit in with Health Catalyst. Most teams have amazing team cohesiveness; everyone genuinely believes in what they're doing. That's probably a function of Health Catalyst actually doing amazing things in the healthcare industry.

Cons

It seems to be "hit or miss" with upper management all the way down to team leaders. Some in upper management make decisions that deeply affect a lot of people, seemingly without concern for those people. Perhaps this is normal in a "regular" corporate environment, but Health Catalyst claims to be above that kind of stuff. Team leaders, managers, directors, and more seem to be promoted because of who they are related to, or how friendly they are with upper management. One needs only take a cursory look at last names to understand how wide spread it is. I realize this can be hard to control, but a culture of corruption and a culture of love and caring (as is advertised) can't coexist in any meaningful way. People need to feel valued, and they feel valued when there is career progression not based on your last name. This is not necessarily the company's fault, but people hold grudges. It seems that if you make someone unhappy (and we all do sometimes), you will never be promoted or considered for other positions. If you make someone angry, even if it was the right thing to do, you might as well look for another job.

Thank you for your thoughtful review, and for pointing out areas of challenge which come with the tremendous growth that we have experienced here. I might have a different perspective on the issue of nepotism here at Health Catalyst, but I understand how nuanced and personal one's perspective can be on this topic, depending on what one's personal experience has been. I will just say that I believe we try very hard to mitigate the potential downside effects of hiring those with family ties, while allowing the positive results to grow and strengthen. No question, growth is hard, and trying to achieve sustainability at the level to which we aspire will continue to require the best from each of us. Thank you for all that you do to drive us forward!

Pros

Employee benefits are great, if not overboard to an extent.

Cons

Company has great goals but lack the execution and the right people directing the ship product wise. A lot of the things that they claim to do while in interviews, meetings never happen or only are executed at 50% max. The culture lacks real progress in the software product and business progress with assessing what needs to be done on an enterprise level. The company talks big with their plans but fails in implementation, not even close.

Thank you very much for your review. Growth is hard. There is no doubt about it. I am glad that you found Catalyst benefits to be of help during your time with us. I am not sure when you may have left Health Catalyst, and I am not sure whether there is a clear overlap between the issues you raise in your review and the changes we are currently working through at Health Catalyst, but my guess is that there is at least partial overlap between the two. We recently have changed several aspects of our organizational structure to better align with how we see our market changing, and we are excited about the prospect of this. As with growth, change is also hard. We accept this. We know that without a process to address needed change, it is hard for any organization to appropriately stay ahead of the market. I am sorry that Health Catalyst didn't turn out to be a fit for you, and I sincerely wish you the best in your next role! Best, Jeff Selander

Pros

Benefits are awesome! Dan Burton is by far the best CEO I've ever seen! He seems genuine and I believe he wants the best for the team members. I also believe in what the company does. It's quite amazing! The changes they are making in the industry are second to none. I'm proud to say I work for such a neat company.

Cons

It seems if you are in management (some teams) you are allowed to say anything you want to those below you. There is a definite hierarchy there and you know where you stand so check your self worth at the door because in a lower position, you'll know you don't matter. Environment isn't warm. One of the traits they want team members to have is humility. I've heard more team members talk about how humble they are over and over again, but let's be honest....if you have to point out you are humble, you aren't. Also, I don't get much feedback from my manager, but when I do it's negative. Others sing my praises, but my manager never cares enough to see the positive I guess. As a side note, I think most teams at HC work better than this.

Thank you for your thoughtful review of your experience here at Health Catalyst. I agree that Dan is a fantastic CEO, and I am also excited by where I see the industry heading, and that Health Catalyst can be a meaningful contributor to these positive changes. I also thank you for your candid feedback regarding the challenges that you see, and that you personally are experiencing. Let me first say that your experience is not one that we would hope or expect for our team members, at any level of the organization. Regardless of the situation, regardless of relative level in the company, people ALWAYS deserve the right to be treated with respect. We also understand that one of the consequences of our rapid growth has been that we have, as an organization, lagged behind in providing proper and regular guidance and tools to our managers in a scalable way. I am happy to say that we are beginning to change this. We are almost done with a leadership training course that will provide guidance and practical tools around such things as how to conduct a successful 1:1, including cadence and topics to cover; how to provide (positive and negative) feedback to team members in a productive way; and several other topics that should be helpful to the challenges you raise above. This training will roll out to managers beginning in February. Once we have covered the topic with managers, we will provide the same training to all team members, so that all Catalyst team members will be on the same page regarding best practice in this area. There will be several other leadership training courses developed and rolled out this year as well. Let me close by saying thank you once again for your feedback. We will do better here. I would also love to understand more, and would provide absolute confidentiality if you would be willing to reach out to me directly for further discussion. Please consider it, I would be honored by your trust in me if you did. Sincerely, Jeff Selander
