Pros

I have been with Health First for over 10 years now, since returning home from my time in Afghanistan. It was a significant change from what I was accustomed to in the decade prior, which consisted of all government or military aligned jobs. When I got home, I was not even looking for a job; Health First found me. During my 10 years of employment, Information Technology has evolved from a small team with minimal security considerations to one that leads the Healthcare field in many areas, supported by a dedicated Cybersecurity Team and an enhanced focus on security-minded decisions across all of IT. Health First has been very open and flexible when working with our on-call schedules and has always made things right when massive projects or emergencies run over. They have provided several opportunities for advancement, and turnover has greatly diminished compared to earlier times. We have a strong team that works well together, and I believe is getting better every day. There is also the fact that, given our non-profit status, I believe my work benefits the community, not just lining the pockets of shareholders. What we do matters, and there is a genuine sense of job satisfaction that comes with it. I love where I work, and I hope opportunities continue to be available for growth, as I could see myself staying here until I retire.

Cons

I am not saying that Health First is perfect, and I have butted heads with management a few times over the past decade, but in the end, I do believe that they always listened and did what they could to address concerns and issues. If I had one major issue with Health First, it would be that the way they have set up their Health Insurance, especially the High Value plan, which suggests coverage exists in-network for services, when in reality, there are times when no providers are available, and they will not always make exceptions. I am not opposed to how they run the High Value plan, as it is an exceptional value, but I think the way they document it in the employee benefits book is misleading. The middle plan addresses these issues, but creates expenses where none existed for Health First providers on the High Value plan, which I feel disincentivizes the use of our own providers, which would also save Health First money, but at least it is clearly documented. That said, the coverage is still great on either plan as long as you know what you are selecting. It is certainly some of the best value for the cost of health insurance I have ever had. If I had to list any other downsides, it might be that we are busy, especially recently, but I expected that with this sort of job, and as mentioned before, when things get crazy, management makes it right for us. Health First is not perfect, but I believe they genuinely want what is best for our associates and our community. I also feel that my team and I make a real difference.
