Is it still the 1980s?

Pros

The company is one of the best run TV station broadcasters in the business. You're connected to the Hearst empire, which gives opportunities for high-achievers to connect with other groups of the media empire. Citizens United ruling will pad the earnings for companies like Hearst Television which will help alleviate some medium-term challenges facing this company and the rest of the industry.

Cons

Unfortunately all broadcasters are only good at the same "tactics" that made them successful through the 1980s. Hearst is especially prone to this because its a very top-down management style. I always got the feeling from station management that meeting your numbers was a do-or-die principle. Also the annual line-item budgeting process completely sidelined senior management for two months out of year and made it impossible to do anything else.

Pros

Cash rich company with a real sense of direction from a product perspective. They have brought on some new and exciting leaders that will help with the drive to digital. The building is incredible and the gym and doctors office perks are great. Competitive salaries.

Cons

I have been working for big companies for almost 20 years and the Hearsts benefits package is pathetic. Not to mention when you get hired you have to wait almost 2 months to get them. That is unacceptable for a large company. The 401k match is a joke. The company is so decentralized it's also inefficient in some areas. HR is different in every unit and some like Hearst Newspapers are lacking HR. Core functions like HR, finance, IT etc should all be centralized for efficiency. Good news is they have started this for IT.
