Pros

Solid company with great benefits, ability to work in other regions/districts, and work on high profile large scale projects.

Cons

If salaried/full time work hours are more than full time (avg. 60 hour work week); no work/life balance although HP states this is a core value; Sink or Swim training mentality - as a new hire or intern this is very disconcerting regardless of your experience/time in the industry; lack of team work - highly competitive environment which goes against “train your replacement” core value and impacts communication within the team negatively

Pros

HP has incredible training. It's virtually impossible not to become an expert if you are with the company 5 years. The benefits are incredible as well. 15% contribution to 401k and great health care. The role of a field engineer is challenging but one of my favorite roles I have ever had. You'll work hard, learn a lot and be able to take pride that you contributed directly to the success of a project.

Cons

Long work hours and frequent short notice moving. But that's the nature of construction. I changed industries as a result. There is no better company than HP if you are committed to the construction industry.

Pros

You will be forced to learn if you are coming out of college. If you are lucky to have a good Superintendent and other Field Engineers who have been through at least one Field Engineer rotation it will allow you to learn a tremendous amount.

Cons

Work/Life is extremely out of balance. There is a surface (it is mentioned by District Office personnel) attempt to correct this however at the jobsite it is not truly implemented by management/supervisors. Bottleneck promotion hierarchy - once you move through the lower tier promotion system you will bottle neck at the Area Superintendent level. Pay - compared to industry peers Hensel Phelps is well below. The marketing strategy of including benefits such as Health Benefits as part of the take home compensation does not reflect well upon the company because candidates can see through the marketing. "Good Old Boy" promotion system. It is quite obvious who the favorites are within the District thus those individuals seem to advance quickly in their career.
