Pros

Pay is pretty fair. Long term benefits are better than any other company I have seen. Company pretty helpful with moves.

Cons

You will be working a lot and earning every dollar that they pay you, which is pretty fair. Long term benefits here are great, but everyone here refers to them as exactly what they are "Golden Handcuffs". Company is pretty helpful with moving reimbursements and what not, but you will have to move a lot. If you are super attached to being in any one particular area this is not the company or industry for you. Personally I was on my third move after only 20 months with the company. You really need to be able to work by yourself and stay motivated on your own because more likely than not you won't have anyone else looking out for you. Good be a great experience or a terrible experience, enter at your own risk.

Pros

Hensel Phelps has a great company culture, they cultivate pride for the project you work on. The staff is like a family, and are very supportive, answers to problems are everywhere if you just ask. The pay is great, and benefits are even better. A lot of people complain about the long hours, but this is large commercial construction, it comes with the industry.

Cons

The long hours can take a toll on your personal life, and make it very hard to balance work/life. As an Intern, I can not attest to the pains of moving a lot, but we had several people come and go with in the 12 weeks that I worked. Seems to be that your more of a pawn in their big game, versus being a person with a life and family. Thie hardest part about working at HP is the fact that you can either get great leaders, or just awful ones that you question how they got there. The real problem with this is, your Project Manager & Superintendent can really make or break you when you start with this company; so if you get the wrong one you may have to dig yourself out of a hole.

Pros

The benefits package is great. Even though there were a lot of bad apples when it comes to supervisors and colleagues, there are a few awesome individuals that made working bearable and are actually concerned with the philosophy of the company: "You are teaching the person who will replace you."

Cons

Many people put the pay into a pro, but it is a con. Based upon the amount of hours worked, I averaged my weekly pay to be on par with those who make anywhere between the 10-12 dollar an hour wage. I worked on average 14 hour days for six, sometimes seven, days a week, and got major flack for requesting vacation. There are many people who backstab at the company to make themselves look good and you look bad, and that applies to whatever position you hold, whether a field engineer or an area superintendent. I like to keep myself in great physical shape, and that was next to impossible with this job since literally I would be home only to sleep (and you need it after a day's work on this job). Contrary to other companies, from my observations of my supervisors on various projects, the hours don't get better as you move up. Only days off are Sundays (if you're lucky enough to be placed on a project that warrants no weekend work) or holidays (6 of them a year). From personal experience, they give you an average of THREE days to relocate to another project (that includes packing up your entire house/family and moving to the new project) and yet they don't respect any personal request you may have (i.e. kid's birthday, anniversary, etc.). After a year, I was so fed up with the work conditions that I was more than willing to give it up and look for something else rather than stick it out for another year. Warning to prospective employees: if you are not an alcoholic, workaholic, and cherish your balance of work/life, then I highly recommend you keep looking. Don't take the bait like I did. This company is not worth your life.
