Pros

Hotel and event center are lovely. Some members of staff are very nice people and hard workers.

Cons

The Hilton Garden Inn- West Des Moines defines nepotism. The general manager has two of his daughters working there, and one in particular is an absolute nightmare to work with. Her laziness and terrible attitude work like a poison on the morale of the rest of the staff. She constantly screams at and demeans co-workers, whispers about people within earshot, gives the silent treatment, etc. She was removed from the front desk manager position to an undefined "assistant" position due to her absolute failure as a front desk manager and trainer. She was unprofessional, condescending, rude, lazy, and had such poor hygiene that she made the entire back office smell horrible nearly every day. The whole front desk staff despised her but was afraid to speak out against her due to retaliation by management. Her father (the general manager) turns a blind eye to her unprofessional antics. She was incredibly insecure, resulting in her turning against those she was threatened by- intelligent people who wouldn't allow her to talk down to them. Even though she was removed from the front desk manager position, and should not be involved in the front desk at all, she still has enormous say in front desk matters and retaliates by cutting the shifts of co-workers she doesn't like. She truly was the worst person that I have ever worked with, and I am confident she would have been fired ten times over if she worked anywhere else. Her sister, who works at the front desk, also receives special treatment by hand-picking her shifts and who she gets to work with while her co-workers have absolutely no say in the matter. Nepotism in every sense of the word. I also witnessed a co-worker being harassed and retaliated against for becoming pregnant. She was the butt of jokes and constant gossiping behind her back. When certain co-workers (like those mentioned above) turned against her, she had her shifts cut and was treated so poorly at work that I think she has grounds for a discrimination and/or harassment lawsuit. The current person running the front desk means well, but is also a terrible manager. She tries hard at her job but is not intelligent and doesn't know how to lead. To make matters worse, she's clearly terrified of the manager's daughter, who treats her like a puppet. If you are looking for a fair workplace, never work here, at the front desk in particular. Employees are harassed on a daily basis and the climate will not change until certain members of the staff leave. The problem is that those who are behind most (if not all) of the office drama will absolutely never be fired due to family ties. It is a horrific, demeaning, unprofessional place to work.
