Pros

The people are friendly. Central London offices are nice with free fruit as perks. I am lucky enough to work with a talented team. Truly the nicest place I have ever worked. You can work from home a few days a week if your manager and team do the same but it does vary wildly between teams.

Cons

Big cost savings from parent company Centrica means that there are periodic redundancies of hard working people and outsourcing to Eastern Europe just to save money. This is eroding trust and there isn’t a feeling we will get sold off at any point. This isn’t great when you are trying to build a business. Lots of contractors getting paid big big bucks compared to permenant staff - simply a reflection of the market but not great knowing how much your colleagues earn compared to you!

Hive is stuck in a hit and miss loop

Pros

- The vibes are good, colleagues are nice to each other. - Some work from home options. Although it's not totally ingrained in the culture of the company, if asked there usually are no problems to work from home. - Centrica discounts, British Gas employee special tariffs, affordable healthcare plans, gym partly subsidised, etc... - Free Hive gear, and first to test any new device before coming out to the market. - The product has got potential to be great - People working at Hive are usually talented

Cons

- Senior management is so keen on making money quick to show Centrica how successful (not) Hive is and therefore delivering a crap experience throughout, that they are actually diminishing the value of the brand. - The head of product is a contractor, as well as 90% of the development teams for all platforms, and a big number on design, product and marketing. This is a massive issue, because most of them don't care about the long term goals of the product. - There is no such thing as innovation and where there is, it doesn't come out to the market until it's too late and another company gets there first. - No clear direction about what Hive is trying to achieve in the long run. - Agile? What is that? - Salary disparity is ridiculous. People on same teams can have 70% salary difference while doing the same job and having the same title.

Pros

Mostly great people. Free lunch once a month

Cons

SLT have completely lost touch with customers. Whilst they focus on profit and cost-cutting, the stability of products and services, reputation of the brand and customer satisfaction are suffering. Staff are stretched to their limits with little or no recognition for their efforts or achievements. The company has grown well beyond a start-up, yet continues to operate in a disjointed and haphazard fashion which is stressful for everyone. I had the constant feeling that at any moment it could all come crashing down.
