Not worth it

Pros

Decent compensation and remote work

Cons

Hopper's problems start at the top. The leadership team, and particularly the CEO, are quite immature. They believe they are always right, do not tolerate dissenting opinions, and bully others. This sets the tone for the company culture, which is toxic and rampant with favoritism. On the topic of culture, Hopper has lifted all of its company values from Amazon. There is no originality here. You'll hear a lot about the single-threaded ownership (STO) model, but it is a meaningless buzzword at Hopper. There is no ownership or autonomy, and STO is used to hand-wave concerns about the chaos and silos that exist within the company. At an operational level, the company is extremely disorganized. The company dismantled many centralized functions and was slow to replace them. Onboarding was a joke. My laptop didn't arrive before my first day. I was scheduled to meet with people who never showed up, and was pointed towards some videos and slide decks on Google Drive instead. Engineering at Hopper is a mixed bag. On one hand, there are some talented developers working here. On the other hand, teams are judged entirely on growth metrics and zero time is allocated towards improving the code base. As a result, quality is not a focus. Hopper is a sprawling landscape of buggy, poorly designed microservices with no standardization and very little communication between departments. Everyone seems to acknowledge that it is bad, but no one can do anything about it. Folks are constantly being let go and there's a looming sense of uncertainty about your fate at the company. The pay was decent, but I couldn't imagine working there long enough to see the stock options become worth anything.
