Pros

The children and the parents were great. I found them to be more professional and wanting the help of the community. I enjoyed seeing the academic progress the children made throughout the school year. Many of my parents were very helpful when it came to volunteering, whether it was it the classroom or planning field trips.

Cons

The worst thing about my 8 year experience at HISD was the Administration team. My first principal was a man who did not care about the children. He just wanted to find a teacher to have an affair with him. He also had most of his teachers cheat on the state exams. I am very surprise he got as far as he did. He spoke like he had only a 3rd grade education. He love to bully and harass the teachers that would not flirt with him. HISD promoted him to an Apollo 20 school. The second principal I worked under was female. She was into firing people to lower the school budget. She would even go and lie about teachers to keep her $74,000 per. year job. She too did not care about the well being of the students.

Pros

Regular pay, plenty of time off available, and several paid holidays each year. Opportunities to network and attend professional development. Expectation to use computers to check email everyday and post grades/grade-book online, so good technology access, including WiFi.

Cons

Poor organizational communication from Administration to Principals to School Community. Poor support of teachers with struggling students (from struggling families and broken homes). Less than adequate nor compassionate use of psychology services for students needing counseling due to the effects of drug use by parents, both current use and prenatal. Poor use of Librarians, restricting access of students to a life-changing mentor. Little respect for custodial staff. Too many non-instructional staff not involved directly with students; all staff should be involved in education or mentoring students.
