Pros

It's hard to name a good reason to work in HISD right now. In all sincerity, I would stay away until the state returns the district to local control. TEA and Dept. of Ed. are destroying it at present.

Cons

Too many to list, but I have seen with my own eyes dozens of teachers being told their signed contracts would not be honored. The big salaries promised at job fairs were bait and switch. When paychecks went out for the first time after the school year started, teachers across the district were shocked to find the $10,000 bonuses that had been written into their contracts was gone. They were told to lawyer up if they didn't like their new rate of pay. The union couldn't keep up and the contracts were ultimately not honored. It's so very bad.

Pros

-worked in other districts before that didn't have taxpayer money so didn't have school supplies for teachers -at least most HISD schools have copy paper, pencils, supplies for student/teacher use -I seriously can't think of anymore positives.

Cons

-you must join a union and have a union rep to help explain things to you and get anything done -took 6 weeks off for my pregnancy leave and took away my medical benefits completely. -principal constantly tells me I suck as a teacher, I suck at classroom management, I suck I suck I suck. -zero admin support if a child acts up in your classroom it's all YOUR fault and your made to look like the idiot. -Students are no longer accountable for their own actions. -my school is closing this semester none of us will have a job come next school year. Why are they still coming in and observing me anyways? -constantly in my classroom and observing and giving me low scores -don't care about you or your health or what youre going through.

Pros

Scheduled breaks and extra pay of $50 an hour for tutorials and $25 an hour for after school activities when you work at elementary schools.

Cons

You don't recieve adequate planning time and administrators don't assist with behavior issues.
