Pros

Being one of the larger school districts in the nation, HISD gets a lot of attention from the public education community. For instance, outside vendors are excited to work with you. Because it was such a challenging place to work, it's easy to bond with other staff members over the sometimes miserable situations you find yourself in as a result of working for such a large federally funded entity.

Cons

District-wide programs sometimes don't work on all campuses. Lots of hoops to jump through to get anything done. Too much testing.

Pros

Houston ISD offers competitive salaries and benefits to all employees. Of course all the "perks" of being a teacher, including the time off. You also receive a nice bank of sick days and vacation days on top of holidays.

Cons

It's probably just my school, but there is often no way for me to tell who to listen to because one administrator will say one thing and my appraiser will tell me to do another. There is constant bickering among the administration. Teachers and staff are not happy and no one feels like they can trust anyone.

-No support from administration (for new teachers particularly) -Organized at district level, but very unorganized at individual school level -Evaluation system is inaccurate and subjective -No funding for resources (have to buy most classroom supplies on your own)
