Beautiful on the outside, but alienating and distrustful inside

HHMI Janelia offers world-class infrastructure for scientific research — excellent funding, cutting-edge equipment, and a beautiful, peaceful campus environment. For those who are deeply focused on their science and don’t need much human interaction, it might seem ideal. Housing is convenient, and some labs do provide a degree of autonomy.
Cons
The outward image of warmth, creativity, and collaboration often masks a colder, more isolating reality. Social interaction is minimal. People frequently avoid eye contact or even turn away when they see you. For international researchers or those who don’t “fit in” socially, the experience can be deeply alienating. There is a culture of silence — being honest can be risky. It often feels like everything you say might be overheard, passed along, and eventually used against you. Navigating this place sometimes requires more social calculation than actual scientific skill. Although not everyone is under pressure to publish — some scientists go years without a single paper — in certain labs, the environment is deeply toxic. Abusive or manipulative behavior by PIs or senior staff is tolerated, dismissed as a “personality issue,” or treated as a minor inconvenience. There is little to no accountability, and when problems arise, the only “solution” is to quietly let the employee leave. This leaves vulnerable people — especially early-career scientists — completely unprotected. Some are lucky: they find a decent mentor, a healthy lab, and manage to grow. But that kind of luck should not be the only thing standing between someone and burnout.
