Various factors created the perfect storm for high competition, sabotage and drama in my department. Very kind people got caught in a lot of uncomfortable situations as a result. The good pay was also compromised with tons of texts on days off/ evenings, only some reasonable and related to work. It feels bad to feel you can’t get your footing because of boundary issues, and to hear badmouthing about other staff who seem to be appropriate in their jobs. There’s a lot of turnover, so my department is always short-staffed. This makes it hard to implement creative ideas for programming since the basic aspects of patient services take priority, leaving little time to move beyond this. Although I feel other departments are healthier (and I think there is potential for my own department in the future), my experience has been very distressing. I’ve seen people in other hospitals fired for a fraction of what I’ve witnessed here.
