Pros

* Good work-life balance * Great people to work with * Great salary, benefits * Pretty good software development practices * Pretty good training policies * Great company for career advancement if you're a consultant.

Cons

* Can't say "no" to clients, so there's a tendency to sacrifice long term, strategic development priorities for short term client satisfaction. * I always had the sense that the organization doesn't truly comprehend the costs and trade-offs needed to produce a robust, high-quality commercial software product. * During my time there, I watched the most talented software developers we hired work there for a few years, then get frustrated and move on. * Not a great company for career advancement if you're a software developer.

Pros

(Comments are for the Portland office that contains the healthcare product group) The hiring process is careful and favors character and emotional intelligence over experience. Just about everyone I've worked with has been professional, intelligent, and even kind. Almost all of the directors are internally-promoted long-timers, so things have generally been stable for the past decade. The strong culture has led to longer retention rates than is typical. Management also is exceptionally good about avoiding the blame game. Huron Healthcare has also been a market leader in their space for a long time, which has led to interesting technical projects over the years.

Cons

The healthcare group just went through its second round of layoffs in an 8 month period. A new, re-engineered version of one of the money-maker products has been shelved and it is clear the department is in a major transitional phase. This has led to a number of departures by experienced technical staff. Those considering product-focused roles (e.g. software, product ownership) will want to get clear and detailed explanation on the department's short- and long-term strategy to ensure a good fit. Software engineers should inquire about the technologies being used to ensure relevance. And overall, it must be kept in mind that Huron is a consulting company first, and happens to use software for some of its client-facing solutions. This sometimes leads to frustration among more mature technologists (developers, QA, support) who are used to more mature SW development processes and thinking.
