Pros

Decent starting asst. mgr./manager salaries, benefits, retirement plans. You're on your feet a lot so you burn calories, as long as you don't eat all the free food in the back. Several employees to make friends with. I met quite a few characters working at HyVee.

Cons

Dealing with hundreds/thousands of employees per day whining about coupons and not being able to have 20 transactions in order to abuse sale ads. Late and early hours for everyone outside of upper management. It's boring, pointless work- food comes in; food goes out. The uniforms are lame. Shouldn't have to wear a tie and button up shirt while lugging boxes and running around like a mad man all day. The meat department, the bakers, the kitchen staff, etc. all wear ties and button up shirts! Khaki and polo shirts work fine. Get with the times.

Pros

Friendly coworkers Fast training Adequate pay - enough to let me pay my own way through college Flexible scheduling

Cons

Since every store is semi-independent, some decisions regarding employee review times and pay raises may vary depending on the store manager's preferences. It seems to me that advancement (at least in upper-level positions) depends less on skill and more on who you know within the company. At least at my store location, unrealistic demands placed on departments by upper management; things that weren't feasible based on the amount of help we had or how busy we were.
