Not really into software products.

Pros

Stable position once you are inside. The networking can be very useful. There is a culture of mentoring and networking that takes a certain amount of effort to get into, but does yield decent information.

Cons

Bureacratic. Poor attention to quality. Overall software product strategy is lacking. Lots of vague, insincere, old-style rah-rah. Management tends to bring in their friends rather than hire for competency. Project schedules are set without understanding the details of what the commitments entail. The product designs tend to be overelaborated and inelegant and user-hostile. They have a rigid, waterfall product management template AND they are attempting to ram agile development into it.

Work at home & schedule flexibility, breadth of opportunities if willing to work remote or relocate.

Cons

Lack of organization and communication. Number of jobs outsourced overseas. Perpetual bureaucratic and budgetary restrictions. The "family" appeal of the "old" IBM if virtually non-existent any longer.

Pros

Stability. The main reason to work for IBM is stability. IBM is less likely to be affected as much as other companies to swings in the job market.

Cons

You do not join IBM Software Group because you are a risk taker. This is a place for the risk adverse and it shows within the company. Many within IBM plateau. They do enough to take a paycheck but nothing more. They are not fired up to make the company grow and succeed. It is a place to hide but still take home a decent paycheck.
