Life at IBM in Baton Rouge

Pros

The people at the Baton Rouge Center are great people to work with. Friendly and gives you help on your project even if they are on another.

Cons

This is a Consultant position, not a developer position. If you are looking for in-house developer position this is not it. It is also a sink or die situation. There is no way to move vertical or horizontal. You are stuck in your position until you find another job. You work 44 hours or more per week which means you will burn out quickly on some project.

Great employer, dying company.

Pros

Fantastic benefits. Great perks. Team oriented work. Opportunities for those without higher education. Allows one to work from home. Friendly to veterans.

Cons

Everyone knows that IBM is a dying company. They excel at research, IT consulting, and business computing, but they have failed to stand out in the big data and social ages.

IBM Response
10y
With a rapidly changing portfolio around cognitive solutions, Internet of Things, and industries like Education...more than 200 new executives joined IBM in 2015...a few of them former CEOs. In addition, we brought in tens of thousands of new hires into the company over the same period. We are really proud to welcome so much new talent and experience into IBM. Thanks for your comment.

Pros

IBM sits in front of massive revenue streams. They pay on time although their ethics (especially on sales commissions) are deplorable.

Cons

Intellectual capital is the only true asset a technology company owns. They are running talent out the door as quickly as possible. There is value in the gigantic revenue they control and huge inertia for their customers to drop them, and if (God help you) you work here, you will see first hand how the leadership team is shoveling that cash into their pockets as quickly as they can.
