Pros

Working at IBM’s San Francisco office provided strong exposure to some of the largest and most influential tech companies, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, ServiceNow, and Salesforce. The role offers access to a wide range of IBM product training resources, which can be valuable for building both technical and business knowledge. You also get the opportunity to collaborate with highly experienced and knowledgeable colleagues, which is a big plus for professional growth.

Cons

Despite the “Technical Specialist” title, the role is fundamentally sales-driven, with strict quotas that can overshadow the technical aspects of the job. Performance expectations are heavily tied to meeting these quotas. If targets are not met, employees may be placed on a performance improvement plan (PIP), regardless of strong performance in prior years. Even consistent overachievement (e.g., exceeding quota in previous years) may not provide much buffer during a downturn year, which can create a high-pressure and sometimes unforgiving work environment.
