Pros

It is a job. It is in the tech industry. It has benefits.

Cons

So, so many. Manager is inept and out of touch. They tell you, "Don't worry. We are going to train you." However, the training is just UDemy videos. Nothing hands on. Most of the projects are internal where your fellow IBMers treat you like garbage and ignore you instead of giving you any help. So, so many politics at every level. For me, six months after I left the company IBM put me into collections for $500 no one can explain to me why IBM thinks I owe them this money. The turnover here is very, very high. That's why they are ALWAYS recruiting.

Pros

- they pay money in exchange for work - people are impressed when you say you've worked at IBM - you have the ability to learn a lot of things and gain exposure to a lot of tech

Cons

- extremely difficult to get a promotion or move laterally within the company unless you're friends with the right people. the internal jobs board is meaningless and broken. - org is so top heavy that your managers will have no power to make positive changes within the org. the real decision making power lies within the manager of the manager of your manager's manager. Your own manager is just a puppet there to make you feel like your words mean something and serve as a punching bag so that upper management is isolated from the discontent of the lower class. - IBM will not give meaning salary increases even if your original role is greatly expanded and you are doing the work of 4 other people concurrently. If you are in a lousy division, expect that this will not change. - IBM has this cult mentality over 'badges', which are obtained via completing small mini courses that do not test you for real skill aptitude. You need to obtain a lot of these in order to gain visibility in IBM. Basically, you need to wear above minimum pieces of flair.

Pros

You have a job...that is

Cons

Tons of issues. I have been with IBM Watson for more than 4 years. Joining IBM is the worst decision I made in my career. I thought Watson might not be the same as the other parts of IBM. But I am wrong... Most of new people I lead or work with left within 2 years. I have trying all the effort I can to deliver solid foundation for Watson...but I failed...not because of me or my team. We are hard working people...because of the IBM leaders. They are the worst leaders I ever work with for my 20 years career. Working in IBM, you have two choice. One is to leave the company and the other is to become the people playing political against your colleagues.
