Pros

Working from home. Many accounts to move around to. Very limited contact with management if you are performing your job well. Satisfaction of performing your job well. Customer contact. There are a lot of very good people to work with that you run across within IBM even though it is mostly in conference calls.

Cons

The fact is IBM has a plan to get rid of everyone in the USA that support customers and sending their jobs overseas to lesser skilled workers who barely speak english which irritates the customers. Then IBM turns around and tries to re-hire you back as a consultant without any benefits (no medical, retirement or vacation) at a reduced rate. IBM has built datacenters and hire in young college kids without experience for dirt cheap (based on what they pay offshore) and keeps the average overall salaries low which pulls your salary down going in as a contractor. IBM then expects us to support and train the kids they hire. Once the kids have gained some experience and since you're a contractor they terminate you without notice. IBM is a ruthless employer and is only concerned about the profits for the CEO, board and upper management. They care less about the people on the frontline building the company by keeping their customers happy and working endless overnight and weekend hours (offshift) that lessens the customer impact and again keeps the customer happy. A salaried systems administrator works on average 60 hours / week with no consideration from IBM. Your expected to do the work at night and attend the planning meetings during the day.

Pros

Big company, easy to fly under the radar and keep your job if you're a mediocre employee. Lots of different projects to move around to.

Cons

Exceptional employees are not rewarded well. Upper management has no respect for employee concerns. Benefits get worse every year. Merit raises and bonuses are pathetically small.

Pros

You get to work from home, and you some what get to managed your own time. Some of the coworkers are nice to work with.

Cons

Caviat: this is a huge organization, so I can only speak about the one group that I was working with. You have no control over your working hours: One day you could be working from 6am - 6pm and three days later you could be working from 6pm - 6am. You constantly working over the weekends and holidays. You only get paid if you get paged: They could assign you to work 56hrs as backup on call for the week, but you will only get paid if you get paged. So it is possible that you will not get paid for the whole week, even if you are responsible for responding to any pages within 15 minutes. You will be spending 50% or more of your time doing paper work. You will be responsible for figuring out how to migrate among the huge bureaucracy and get the right permission to get things done. It is your fault if you didn't get the right permission. Their internal documentation and information sharing system (email, ticketing, calendar...) is arcane and hard to use. Some people will assumed you know everything, even if it is not documented anywhere; or nobody has told you. Lots of laid off without any notice. They gave a whole bunch of us the option of either moving to Dubuque, Iowa -- with out moving expenses -- or get laid off. Wages are like third world country.
