Pros

There is some job flexibility - you can work at home in some jobs. The benefits are good: - Several options for health insurance - Dental/Vision coverage - Long term disability - Matching 401K (but no pension) The pay is good when compared to other companies.

Cons

The hours are very long. People are expected to work overtime almost all of the time. There is no such thing as a 40 hour work week. There are limited opportunities for advancement. It is difficult to transfer into another position - your manager will not want to let you go. The wrong people are rewarded and promoted. Most importantly - they outsource jobs overseas constantly. There is no job security whatsoever.

Pros

IBM has good brand awareness so as a salesperson it is easy to get customer meetings. The company has a broad portfolio of offerings so again as a salesperson you can meet with a lot of different types of customers and offer a multitude of solutions. IBM has a good benefits package, but HP has an even better one because they pay for a car for you to use. IBM offers good salaries but you cannot make commissions anymore due to 6 month quotas.

Cons

The company has too many offerings and too many people. Too many people in management just sit in their homes and bother the in field sales reps. Because the company is so large the pricing for products and services is usually much larger than more nimble competitors. The morale at IBM is really bad right now. The sales culture at IBM has gotten horrible.

Pros

If you are not ambitious and not passionate about your work, if you don't expect much in terms of professional respect, opportunities, fair compensation and fine with being layed off at any time, this might be a company worth considering.

Cons

IBM internal performance review rules promote meritocracy. You can work very hard, accomplish a great deal and still be given a bad or average performance rating just because you were not visible enough to the right people or simply because it was your time to take one for the team. Most employees I know of have given up on trying to improve anything in the products. People are in "survivor" mode - minimum effort for maximum benefit and don't stick your neck out. A lot of truly talented technical people have either left on their own or were layed off. People that seems to be staying behind are poor souls that are stuck at IBM for some reason, or those who play internal politics well.
