Pros

Contracting work is incredibly stable. ICF has some great clients that they work with. Some groups within the company have fantastic culture and cohesion. ICF has a ton of offices around the world, so if you WANT to work in an office, there’s a pretty good chance that there’s a location close to you. Many teams also offer remote employment.

Cons

They use MS Teams and think the Microsoft business suite is The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread, and assimilate companies they acquire towards it. The size of the company makes it very difficult to feel connected to anything beyond just the group you work with directly, and makes senior executives feel unapproachable. CIT is sometimes slow, and sometimes gets in the way of technical staff. Benefits are lacking considering the size of the company, and pay is on the lower end (though this is a trade off for the stability of working for a federal contractor). The business units are largely comprised of the remnants of companies ICF has acquired, and are incredibly siloed. ICF’s growth model seems to focus more on acquiring profitable companies and milking their profits than focusing on streamlining their own internal processes, and because they are publicly owned, there is an inherent push to drive up shareholder value. The timekeeping software is a nightmare. I have repeatedly gotten the vibe from people more central to ICF as a corporation that they resent remote employees. Compensation adjustments are determined by an external team, rather than anyone who actually knows what you do or how hard you do (or don’t) work. PTO offering is quite poor compared to other tech employers. ICF also doesn’t do anything to work on group cohesion, and pinches pennies very hard for any sort of team building exercises.

Thank you for your valuable feedback and recommendations. There are absolutely pros and cons to joining a large company. And just like choosing the right university, it's important to take stock of what is best for you. And the trade-offs of each. It’s wonderful to hear that you’re enjoying various aspects of your experience at ICF, including flexibility to work from the office or remotely, stability, and culture. We actively engage with employees and are constantly identifying ways to enhance their experience—whether that’s through efficiency, professional learning and training, or team activities (virtual or in-person). Have an open and honest conversation with your manager to discuss what you need to make your experience the best it can be. - KZ
