Pros

Friendly, low-key environment with good benefits, vacation, and telework policies. People can bank time for alternative schedules. Union cares. The work is meaningful. Revenue agents always have opportunities to learn and investigate ask questions and learn. The pay competes with the private sector at the undergrad level, but at the graduate degree level, private sector pay wins. Flex time is useful.

Cons

Moves slower than private sector and at senior levels pays less, but some like the trade off. Tech is old an needs to be modernized. Technology and management change comes very slowly. People have a poor view of the IRS. Budget freezes limit opportunities to hire and improve technology.
