Pros

Smart funny fellow employees, decent benefits, interesting work, decent pay.

Cons

Dangerous case work, TIGTA, RRA98, TAO, Appeals.People hate you at parties and always want to tell you about some horror story, your CCW is not honored by the agency. The agency won't fight for you to have confidential plates, the worst most incompetent employees often are the only ones crazy enough to apply for management, there are exceptions to this but with the terrible structure a Grade 12 RO can make more that a Grade 13 manager due to travel/per diem. The job is very stressful.

Pros

In fairness, if you are looking for a secure job, it's the federal government and it isn't going anywhere. Also, it can be a power trip, and many of my colleagues seemed to relish the control we had over various small businesses and individuals. Finally, if you're trying to raise a family and just want a 40-hour job, doing the same thing day in and day out, but often enough flexibility to care for kids, etc---some people think the tradeoff is worth it.

Cons

There is no room at all for creativity or efficiency. Imagine how open the IRS is to new ideas when you're doing your taxes---they bring that same rigidity to all aspects of the job. Also, since nobody but nobody in the federal government is going to advocate for the IRS, they usually get the worst working conditions and facilities, compared to other agencies.

Pros

WorK Life balance - protections of the Civil Service System, Thrift Savings Plan, Medical Benefits (not Dental), Vacation & sick days. Benefits are very generous compared to those offered in private industry.

Cons

At the leadership level - a highly politicized and thereby hypocritical, risk averse leadership culture. This culture filters down through the many unnecessary layers of incompetent management and results in the "appearance" of meeting the mission without in substance doing so. Effectively, examinations (a euphemism for audits) of taxpayers are biased. The more wealthy and politically powerful corporations receive less stringent audits than poor and working class individuals.
