Pros

Interesting work 40 hour workweek Excellent benefits Telework options

Cons

Very archaic & old-school. If you haven't been here a long time, you don't matter. Employee base is older; young people do not want to work here. Horrible technology. Very bureaucratic (it's the government) Not open to new ideas or ways of doing things, even though they are always asking for ideas. Performance reviews based on how long you've been here, not your work.

Pros

Outstanding training(at least before budget cuts 2011-16). Traditional work week 8hrsx5. Stable work environment no lay offs. Challenging work. Able to advance education because of stable work week. Pension..

Cons

Lack of competitive pay (I made 30K more 13 years ago in private industry). No long term disability coverage. When your sick time is used up no more income. Prohibited from Moonlighting due to the appearance of Conflict of interest. ( I made 20K more moonlighting per yr when in private industry. Congressional attacks on all federal employees pay, benefits Allegations of political scandal when none found.

Pros

40 hours a week. It really feels good to have so much free time. There is also plenty of annual leave and sick leave (though you're broke so you better like staycations). The schedule is very flexible. If you know what you're doing, you can work 10 hours a week and management thinks you're working 40. Hell, I'm doing this review at work right now.

Cons

The budget crisis has hit the agency hard and affected promotions. Additionally, promotions are based on nepotism. You need to have a family member in management if you want to get promoted. There is no merit based promotion. Compensation is really abysmal. The compensation is nowhere near living wages in this area.
