Not fair.

Pros

Great benefits....as long as you are professional staff and work at the university level.

Cons

University level is out-of-touch with campus level benefits and the radical difference between professional staff and support staff. Raises are "across the board" rather than based on merit, which means that longevity means more pay, not ability and a good work ethic. It's a very top-heavy work environment with those who run things patting themselves on the back.

Huge bureaucracy; low pay. Great work life balance.

Pros

It may depend where you work, but the university really cared about work-life balance. Professional staff start getting 30 days off a year in the first year (though not everyone takes all of their PTO). Job security for professional staff is also good.

Cons

The pay is low and opportunity for advancement is not the best. Cost of living raises are very little (though part of that may have been that I was employed there during the worst of the recession). Since job security is good, it's very difficult to fire people who aren't holding their own. It's much a governmental job that way.

Pros

Collegiality. Working with the students. Lots of opportunity for growth. Support for educators. Training for "best practices". Current technology--or the opportunity to apply for it.

Cons

The pay. Arbitrary pay--not fair salary structure or vetting process. Raises not in line with cost of living or merit. New faculty are paid up to 20% MORE than their bosses--departmental chairs, etc... Senority is not rewarded. Better to leave your position for a year, come back and be rehired at the higher rate. {lol}
