Not the best, and maybe not the worst

Pros

The company offers wonderful incentives to stick around like the EOY profit share bonus and a decent amount of money invested in each of their hires to put towards Professional Development. The partners appear well-intentioned.

Cons

This place is grossly homogenous. Instrument constantly speaks about changing the company makeup to be more diverse and inclusive, but it's really just a facade to appear progressive. For years, we've had the same white men in the room talking about change without putting in the work. As a creative, be prepared to make the same marketing sites over and over again to match the "Instrument aesthetic." The same people in leadership determine what the final output looks like for every and any project, so there's a general sameness in approach in tandem with an already non-existent design process.

Pros

Bringing together an amazing group of people with an emphasis on fit with the (ever evolving and diversifying) company culture. Team-based structure that enables the company to run as a handful of virtually independent companies, which keeps the energy and competition up. Leadership continually refining and improving benefits and employee opportunities.

Cons

Career paths are a bit fuzzy; pay is honestly a bit low for the industry and quality of talent/work.

Great place to grow if you’re proactive

Pros

Great client list with interesting work. Good work-life balance for an agency. Self motivation and hard work is rewarded. Director level developers and designers are involved in the work and tend not to be gatekeepers. Great producers. Partners are open about the business and decisions. Flexible process. People are friendly. Fun team off sites. Dogs.

Cons

Path to growth can be unclear and mentorship varies from team to team. Employee reviews are infrequent so it’s up to an employee to get more feedback. Each team is different and it can be difficult moving from one to another. Pay is good for Portland but bonuses are rare. The money goes to the top, same as everywhere. Dogs.
