Pros

What I love about the IDB is that the work is intellectually interesting and I really feel that I am making a difference in the region. Its an exciting place to work, with people from all over the world.

Cons

The biggest downside is the bureaucracy, which is draining and often takes away time from meaningful work. Other issues include upper management that does not communicate well and paralyzing disfunctionalities associated with a matrix system. Also decisions regarding how people are organized are often made on a political rather than technical basis, which undermine the ability of staff to be effective.

Pros

First-hand contact with Latin America and the Caribbean, a chance to make a meaningful difference in peoples lives when projects go well, diverse professional staff from many fields and countries, substantial extra-curricular activities including lectures, presentations, film-screenings, cocktail receptions, activity clubs, etc.

Cons

Work-culture is often too relaxed, people taking many breaks, not following through on assignments, and putting off until a later date tasks that could have been accomplished promptly. US Citizens are at a disadvantage at the contract/consultant level due to the two-tiered remuneration system the IDB uses.
